Penang is an island off the coast of peninsular Malaysia. It is also known as the pearl of the orient and directly translates to Betel Nut Island. In Malay, the island is known as Pulau Pinang. The island is shaped like a turtle and measures about 280 square kilometers. It is one of the oldest British settlements in Malaysia going back to the 1786. Penang is not only known for its breath taking, white, sandy beaches. It also prides itself to some of the best historical attractions in the whole of Malaysia. Georgetown for example, which is the capital of Penang Island, has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Kek Lok Si, a Buddhist temple; the Penang Hills; butterfly farm and the botanical garden are also sights to behold.
